  • Remembrance at Appplemore

    Published 13/11/23

On Friday, the whole Applemore community had the opportunity to reflect on the armed forces members who had made such a sacrifice in serving for their country.

To reflect on the physical, emotional, and mental pressures that come from serving and the impact this has on their families and the wider society. At Applemore, we honoured this sacrifice.

We began the day with a whole school assembly in recognition of Armistice Day, and so many of our community wore their poppies of remembrance.  Many of our students also wore their scout and cadet uniforms and we came together as a community to observe our minute’s silence at 11am.

Ryan (Year 10) solemnly played the Last Post at our gathering, and we were joined by Jannas Du Preez, a serving soldier, as we read poems of reflection. Finally, a wreath was laid at the front of the school in a very moving and meaningful morning at Applemore.

  • Une Belle Visite à Boulogne

    Published 09/11/23

On Thursday 12th October, a big group of year 8 students set off very early on a day trip to France.

Our journey to Boulogne – sur – mer went very smoothly, and we soon arrived at our first visit to the amazing Naussica aquarium. We marvelled at the huge variety of sea life on show, with our favourites being the giant rays, turtles, and sharks.

Our next stop was the old-walled town of Boulogne with its cobbled streets and beautiful square.
French berets were a popular souvenir for many students as they tried out their French speaking skills in the gift shop.

Our last activity was a trip to a traditional bakery where baker Bruno showed us how he makes his delicious bread and then we all tucked into his pains au chocolat. We had a fantastic day which really brought our classroom lessons to life, and it was a real pleasure to spend the day with such enthusiastic and well-behaved students.

  • Applemore Update

    Published 03/11/23

    Dear Parents/Carers and Students,

I hope this message finds you well.

I am aware that so many of you are still facing the challenges of no water supply and I hope you are managing to find the support that you need.

Thank you also for your support and understanding today and yesterday. Regrettably, we had to make the difficult decision to close the school for a second day as our lack of water meant that students and staff would not be able to use the toilets, have access to fresh water or prepare food.

The most recent update from Southern Water is that we are expecting the issue to be resolved at some point over the weekend.

Thank you for continuing to support or to complete work that has been posted via ClassCharts.

We really hope to welcome everyone back on Monday morning and for our usual timetabled week to resume.

    Thank you again,

Take care and very best wishes,

    Ms Williams

  • IronBridge Visit

    Published 01/11/23

The motto of the Humanities Department is ‘learn it, love it, live it”.

This autumn Year 7 and Year 8 students had the opportunity to participate in site visits to The Tower of London and to Ironbridge in Shropshire, respectively in support of their study of KS3 History units.  Following Ferny Crofts, this was the first big adventure for Year 7, many of whom had not previously visited London.  A number of students completed a project on their day out highlighting the White Tower, the Crown Jewels and the infamous ravens.

Ironbridge was further afield and a much longer day out.  In spite of the very early start, the enthusiasm from Year 8 was clear.  They exchanged their money into pre-decimal coinage and explored the Victorian living museum with its shops, seaside amusements and industrial heritage.  A costumed guide offered an absorbing account of daily life at the Victorian school.

Next term we are off to Derbyshire to study Hardwick Hall and more locally to Southampton in support of the unit on Medieval towns.
